An Honest Wong Place Review | No Holds Barred

By montanohanz

It’s been a while since I’ve uploaded a restaurant review, and I’m sure a lot of my readers have been looking forward to hearing my thoughts on the latest trendy restaurants whether they’re worth the money or not.

To those that are new to my website, know that all reviews I post on this blog is based on an honest opinion and there’s no sponsorship involved here. I’m just an average Juan trying to help other peeps get their money’s worth!

Allow me to say first that I’ve tried almost all the Chinese places in BGC, so even though I’m not Chinese myself, I at least know the high standard of Chinese restaurants in terms of taste and texture.

Today’s restaurant on my radar is the Wong Place.

Enough yapping from me. Let’s get right to it!

Is it worth eating at the Wong Place?

I’m going to sugarcoat my answer to this a little bit. No, it’s not worth your money and you shouldn’t subject your tastebuds to how awful the cooking was. For those who are too lazy to read through the entire article, the TLDR version is that this restaurant is the worst Chinese restaurant in BGC and that’s already a generous comment.

How much would it cost you to eat there?

If you’re just one person who wants to try a rice bowl, you’d spend anywhere around Php. 500 up to Php. 700 including service charge. But for two people, you’d probably spend somewhere around Php. 1,500 up to 2,000.

How was the service in Wong Place?

To be honest, they serve food quite fast, but that’s not to say that the food was stellar. The staff was attentive until you get your order. But after everything has been served, it’s difficult to request for more water and condiments.

If you’re thinking it might be because the restaurant was busy, it was not busy when we got there. There were plenty of staff around and only 4 tables present. There’s absolutely no reason why some of the staff will avoid eye contact or pretend to do something else just so they won’t have to serve anyone else.

But to be fair with them, they did a good job up until the food was served. I’m giving them a rating of 3/5 in terms of the service.

What was the Ambiance Like?

Suffice to say, the ambiance was actually great. It looked like a great place to hang out when you’re looking in from outside, and if you’re just interested in sitting down and having a drink with your friends, it’s actually pretty decent.

Is the Food at Wong Place Good?

They’re not wrong when they said it’s the Wong place to eat at. Anyone who’s familiar with me knows that I hate wasting food, and I absolutely hate wasting money even more.

However, the food here made me think whether it was smarter to just throw away the food lest I get sick or to take it home and figure out a way to fix it. I’m sure you’re curious why I’d say something like this about a restaurant that seems to have stellar reviews on Google, so I’ll break down why I hate every single item we ordered on the menu.

Salted Egg Fried Shrimp

I’m 90% sure that their salted egg fried shrimp was frozen and then reheated because the texture gave it away. It was stale NOT crunchy. If you look at the picture above, you’ll see the salted egg fried shrimp that looks like kwek kwek.

Did it even taste good at all? Sure. It was okay. In terms of taste, I’d give it a 2.5/5. It’s shrimp, so it’s easy to say that it will be decent. However, the staleness of the breading and the fact that I could tell that they used frozen shrimp made it an unforgivable dish.

For the price you’re paying for this dish alone, you’d want a lot more. I’m giving this an overall score of 1.5/5

Peanut Butter Noodles

In the same picture above, you’ll see the peanut butter noodles. Presentation wise, it looks mediocre. Not awful, but also not good. But what really matters is the taste, texture, and overall enjoyment you’ll get from eating them.

I’ll save you some time and say this might be one of the worst dishes I’ve eaten in my life. The noodles felt so dry and I felt like I was being tortured to eat it. The noodles they used were definitely not fresh, and the taste will make you regret ever looking at their menu and thinking “this restaurant seems great”.

0/5. Enough said.

Pork Chop Fried Rice Bowl

The good news is, this wasn’t the worst item in their menu. It tasted okay but there was nothing notable about the porkchop itself. It was thinly sliced but it was a decent serving. If you absolutely had no other places to eat and you had to eat at the Wrong Place, ordering a pork chop fried rice is fine. However, be careful of the fried rice. The rice was definitely the cheap kind, and you shouldn’t expect the fried rice to taste decent.

2/5.

Wongtons

Should I say wrongtons instead? I may be sounding like I’m picky but I’d rather be branded that instead of lying to myself that it was worth eating because I already paid for it and it’s still food.

Do yourselves a favor and just eat at Master Siomai, Paotsin or any fast food dimsum places because the quality of fast food dimsums is much higher than the dimsum you’ll eat at Wong Place.

1/5.

If you’re looking for a great place to eat dimsums, you won’t regret trying The Empress. It’s the same price point as Wong Place but the taste of the food, standard of the service and the quality of ingredients is immaculate.

I’m sure you’re curious about it, so I’ll release a review of The Empress Dining Palace pretty soon! It’s one of my favorite dinner restaurants in BGC.

Gulaman Soda

This was supposed to be the perfect drink for me. I love gulaman and I absolutely love soda. I was so excited when I saw it on the menu, but after taking a sip of this abomination, I was simply just forcing myself to finish it.

The gulaman syrup does not sit well with carbonated water. It had slight bouts of bitterness and then it quickly becomes overwhelmingly sweet. I felt my tonsils aching after finishing the drink.

1/5.

Final Thoughts

This restaurant was one of the worst Chinese restaurants I’ve tried. For the price you’re paying, you’d expect a higher standard, especially since it’s got a lot of good reviews in Google. Obviously, many of those reviews are sketchy.

Still, one good thing you can take away from the restaurant is that the service was decent and the ambiance was great. Overall, I’m giving it a score of 2/5. If I’m just scoring based on the food, I’d give it 1/5.

The good news is, this wasn’t as bad as Mogu. You can read my review on Mogu if you’re curious as to why I branded it as the worst restaurant I’ve ever tried in BGC, and the absolute worst Japanese restaurant I’ve eaten at.

TLDR version

Wong Place is not worth your money. You can take a short walk around south of market and you’ll find plenty of other places to try. If you absolutely want Chinese food, go down to High Street and pick out any other Chinese restaurant there and you’ll thank yourself.
